Since 1993, the Fund of Janacek Hukvaldy has been the organizer of the International Music Festival Janacek Hukvaldy. Its concept is based on the very origin of the music legacy of the Hukvaldy native - Leos Janacek, in the most varied aspects. The Hukvaldy concert stages are regularly open to young and talented composers and performers for who the Hukvaldy Festival often represents an important stepping stone to other prestigious concert stages. In this respect and for many years, the Fund of Janacek Hukvaldy has been engaged in close co-operation with the Janacek Academy of Music and Grammar School in Ostrava and the Faculty of Art Studies of the Ostrava University in order to open the world of artistic flight to their students and graduates. Another aspect of Janacek's legacy concerns the fact that his music may be heard at the Hukvaldy Festival in all sorts of performance forms, from classical performance to, for instance, folklore. This fact indicates a wide spectrum of music perception possibilities. The International Music Festival has always been opened to chamber and symphonic music, opera and dancing theatre and recently it has also offered a place to music linked with poetry and spoken word and the already mentioned folklore art.
Hukvaldy Castle, the third largest one in the Czech Republic, was founded at an important route connecting Olomouc with Cracow in the 13th century. In mid 14th century, the Castle was purchased by the Bishops of Olomouc who were then the most frequent lords there. Nevertheless, due to unfavourable financial situation of the Olomouc Diocese the castle owners were changed very often in the course of the following decades. Among others, let's name the Hungarian King and later on the Emperor Sigmund. In early 16th century, the Hukvaldy Castle was returned to the Olomouc Diocese until 1948, when it was nationalized. In the 20th century, the castle was desolated and ruined for a long time. St. Andrew Chapel, constructed in the 17th century, is the best preserved building at the castle. The castle yard is dominated by the so called White Tower, build in the 15th century. The Hukvaldy Castle with its adjacent game park is a place where the International Music Festival "Janackovy Hukvady" is held as a memorial of the famous composer who was born in the village of Hukvaly. The whole castle hill is a nature heritage site and its old beech trees provide a shelter to rare fauna and flora species.
